Behind the Song
This song paints a sort of self portrait.
With the opening lyrics, I wanted emphasize our self-curated culture along with its fabrications . When we decide what people see, it’s easy to create an entirely false version of ourselves. What’s worse, is we can even start to believe our own lies.
At the bridge, however, a shift occurs. I am confronted with the truth of who I really am and also, who I am not. Asking the Lord to show me to me, I’ve found that the only time I ever see myself clearly in life is to see God, truly.
It’s not a one time glance that changes my sophisticated, prone-to-wicked heart but a continual onlooking.
The bridge makes light of the holiness of God, which is in stark contrast with my unholiness and so ends with a plea we can be assured Christ answers because he Himself commanded,
Be holy as I am holy.
The last lyric is my personal prayer and I invite you to join me,
Lord, make me a Canvas, a portrait of You.
Music & Lyrics by Trulah
Give me a canvas, I'll paint you a picture
Of my smile not my pain, give you something you can frame
Give me a camera, I'll give you my good side
With the truth hid from your flash, seal me in a photograph
Give me a platform, I'll tell you a story
Of my strength not my flaws, ‘til I hear your sweet applause
And so I fool myself, and everybody else
Until I see You, a glimpse of Your good
Outshines the best that I could be
I am but dark to Your brightness
But Lord in Your likeness
Let there be light in me
Cause when I see you, in contrasting hues
I see my stain of imperfection
But make me a new creation, a pure reflection
Holy are You, holy I long to be
Make me a canvas, a portrait of You
Reflections:
1 John 1:5
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
